You may have never thought of cleaning and sanitizing your toilet cistern before. While this may seem to be a relatively unimportant home maintenance procedure, it is important to do this if you want the water in your toilet fresh and keep the components inside the cistern functioning well.

Here is how you start

First you have turn off the water supply to the cistern.
   

Now you can drain the toilet by flushing the toilet before proceeding with the cleaning process. flush the toilet to remove the water from the tank.



Once the tank is empty, you are ready to begin the cleaning process
Select a disinfectant of your choice. There are many different products that will work efficiently to clean and disinfect the interior of the tank.  It is important to use a product that has been specially designed to use on toilets,  Depending on the material that your toilet is constructed of, certain products may work better than others.



Scrub out the interior thoroughly with a scrubber, this is a more effective way of doing it, especially if you have a very dirty toilet cistern, is to use a toilet scrubber to chip away at the stains and debris. A toothbrush may enable you to easily get in between the nooks and the parts, that would otherwise be difficult to get to. Once you have applied the cleaning solution, let it sit for at least ten minutes. While you are down there, inspect the parts to ensure that everything is in working order.  If you see any signs of deterioration replaced the part immediately.



Once you have inspected to make sure that no repairs are necessary, turn the water back on  to fill up the tank. When the tank have stopped filling you can flush it. This will help to rinse out any remaining residue from the cleaning.  Remember proper maintenance may help you to keep this part of your toilet in working condition for years to come.
